Master's graduate Ronald Villafuerte documented his photographic chronicle titled "Antarctica: Science and Art," which showcases Ecuador's presence in the South Pole. The journey took place between February and March 2023, made possible through an agreement with INOCAR. The expedition was part of the XXVI mission to the Ecuadorian scientific station Pedro Vicente Maldonado in Antarctica.
The mission, carried out under an agreement between ESPOL and INOCAR, included the participation of the professor, whose goal was to facilitate academic exchange and promote the work conducted by Ecuadorian scientists from various universities, as well as INOCAR. The research stay focused on studying the amount of micro and macro plastics in the area and the biota of the South Shetland Islands.
Professor Villafuerte expressed that his greatest motivation for participating in the expedition was the opportunity to photograph in such an extreme and inhospitable location. He noted that "it is an experience that might only come once in a lifetime." Additionally, he emphasized that his project aims not only to document his personal experience but also to highlight Ecuador's presence in Antarctica and contribute to the scientific outreach efforts of the project.
