In a heartfelt event, the "Leyendas de Barro" monument was inaugurated, paying tribute to the potters of the Samborondón canton. This project is the result of a collaborative effort between ESPOL's Faculty of Art, Design, and Audiovisual Communication, Estudio Lapar, and the Municipality of Samborondón. It stands as a symbol of preserving ancestral knowledge and strengthening the circular economy of our artisans.
The inauguration event was attended by the Mayor of Samborondón, Ing. Juan José Yúnez, who praised "Leyendas de Barro" as an initiative that honors traditions with an innovative touch. ESPOL’s Rector, Cecilia Paredes Verduga, Ph.D., highlighted the representation of the classic clay vessel, merging the ancestral with the modern. Nayeth Solórzano, Ph.D., Dean of FADCOM, commended this valuable initiative and congratulated the students and faculty of her department for their work, inviting attendees to explore the various projects that the faculty and the Product Design program can offer to the community and the country.
Diego Tapia, a FADCOM student responsible for designing the sculpture, explained that the monument’s design is inspired by a traditional clay vessel, aiming to evoke geodesic forms that blend tradition with modernity. Its cover, featuring an ascending spiral, symbolizes the flow of inspiration and the creative process, while the sculpted hands at the concrete base personify the dedication of the potters and the legacy passed down through generations.
This work seeks to raise community awareness of our cultural identity, promoting tourism and sustainable development in our beloved region. It is a well-deserved tribute to the potters, whose tireless work preserves the very essence of Samborondón.
