Professor Andrea Pino MSc., a faculty member of FADCOM and president of the Dry Forest Network of Ecuador, received the award as a Forest Hero. This recognition was granted by the SACHA awards in the category of sustainable forest management, for the institutional program Bosque Protector La Prosperina, of which she has been the director since 2018.
The SACHA initiative this year awarded these recognitions to community leaders or entrepreneurs, who will work on projects aimed at the management, conservation, or restoration of forests, to generate or maintain ecosystem services and goods.
Professor Pino emphasizes the work of the team behind the BP program. She also highlights that the achievements made allowed for the involvement of more entities and members in the activities carried out.
The SACHA awards jury was international, and for each category, they evaluated the evidence and results achieved. Additionally, the application required an external agent to vouch for the work done.
In the coming months, expert panels will be organized to replicate and raise awareness about forest heroes, their life stories, and bring them closer to the people as a way to plant a seed that will later generate more projects of this kind in the region. In the previous edition, the BP program also received recognition in the same category.
