Students from the Product Design course at the Faculty of Art, Design and Communication (FADCOM) have developed artistic furniture that enhances the identity of the faculty. The set consists of a concrete seat and an iguana sculpture with polygonal modelling, making it an example of functional design and applied creativity.

The design and construction process was carried out by the students under the guidance of lecturer Francesco Magnone.

The work was carried out in several phases:

  • Sketching and layout: For the seat, sketches were made following the brief to design an organic form. From these sketches, three-dimensional models were created in Fusion 360, which were then materialised in cardboard with the help of laser cutting. To model the iguana, Slicer software was used to modify the model of a real iguana to obtain a polygonal figure. Prototyping: The cardboard models were filled with plaster to simulate the cement and select the final design.

  • Prototyping: The seat models were covered with plaster to simulate cement and facilitate the selection of the final design. On the other hand, the iguana mock-up was made using 3D printing.

  • Seat construction: Layers of foam were cut and assembled using expanding foam as an adhesive. The final shape was then manually sculpted and reinforced with a metal grid structure covered with concrete.

  • Modelling of the iguana: From the three-dimensional model, a display of the pieces was generated. This was printed to real scale and adhered to metal sheets. Finally, the pieces were cut and assembled to shape the sculpture.

The furniture was recently installed at the entrance of FADCOM, where it is available for the university community to enjoy and form part of the academic environment. This project represents a fusion of art, design and technology, promoting hands-on learning and collaborative work. It also highlights the local identity with the representation of the iguana, an emblematic symbol of the city.
