Víctor Estrada, M.Sc., an alumni and technical instructor at FADCOM with a master's degree in Digital Audiovisual Postproduction, is participating in the 9th Guayaquil International Film Festival with his short film titled "El Transbordador Espacial." The film will be screened at the MAAC-CINE auditorium on August 30, 2023, at 18:30.
The project was developed during the global confinement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Víctor Estrada and his family took the initiative to bring this audiovisual work to life, allowing Víctor to implement the stop motion technique, a form of animation he has cherished since childhood.
"El Transbordador Espacial" serves as a tribute to one of the most recognizable technological icons in the history of space exploration. The short film was created using 90% recycled materials for the construction of models, sets, and characters, which helped reduce costs and optimize resources.
Víctor Estrada built significant relationships during his Master’s in Digital Audiovisual Postproduction at ESPOL, which enabled him to combine the skills of several professionals in the field to achieve a cutting-edge result. Byron Cortez provided narration, Nicolás Pablo created the original musical composition, Jonathan Benites handled 3D design and animation, and Mariuxi Romero contributed to animation and postproduction, all of whom were pivotal to the project's success.
Despite the obstacles encountered throughout the process, the team persevered with determination. Recycling became an essential resource for creating models, figures, and props used in the filming. Additionally, the unwavering support from family, friends, and colleagues in the audiovisual field was crucial for the successful completion of the project.
The project culminated in the first quarter of 2023, leading to the birth of "Stopmonautas," an independent animation studio focused on the art of stop motion. This studio not only aims to nurture a passion for this technique but also to promote stop motion cinema in Ecuador and beyond.
Looking to the future, Víctor Estrada and his team have high aspirations for "El Transbordador Espacial." Beyond its participation in local and international film festivals, they hope the short film will reach NASA, serving as a modest tribute to space exploration and the legacy of the space shuttle.
